Trains go on wrong way

I know that without screenshot that would show what is go it is hard to help but ...
See improved screenshot in attechment. Yellow-pink line is that wrong way, yellow-green line is that right way. Start point is on left bottom end of yellow-green line.

I connected two cities by two railways - short (and direct) and long (via another two points - city and factory). Freight trains used that short way at first - but after some time they began to using that long way - and it causes problems (that trains block each other in those two points - because some trains only go through ...).

I tried to find obstacle - and also to rebuild that way - but without result ... because one else freight train use that way.
I don't understand it because difference in lengths is quite great.

OK, first greenish branch has much more curves. pink one only three curves in total => distance with curves are almost equal for both branches.

Maybe greenish one has some slower tracks => does not affect most freight trains so much => most freight trains (depending on max speed) prefer this branch

There is a malus per occupied tile by train => lot of trains => pink route may win. (However, this is the first game where is really was noticed. This effect is most pronounced on cars though.)

Are all factors that come in to play when selecting a route listed somewhere outside the code? I knew about curve penalty, but not the other two. The latter might explain why some lines alternate between two possible routes periodically.

Waypoints have been my solution for stubborn routing with significant negative consequences (which might just be that they look silly enough).

All tracks has the same speed - 160 km/h.

Once I saw that trains used one branch for one direction - and else branch for other direction - but this is not that situation.

As I wrote, trains originally used that yellow-green branch - but after some time they began using that yellow-pink branch.

If trains would use that yellow-pink branch since start (of being of those lines), it would be right (meanwhile it would be very strange) - but they began using that yellow-pink after some time.

They could not use that yellow-green branch for some time because during re-building of track on faster I disconnected electrification at one place.

After re-connecting of electrification trains returned to that yellow-green branch for some time - but after some time they began using back that yellow-pink branch.

Green route had been used by three lines (of totally about five or six trains) - but pink route had been used by four lines (of much more trains).

I can try to improve that upper part of green branch by decreasing of number of curves of 1 - but I am not sure that it will return trains to green branch.

Are you able to post a screenshot of the rail junction showing the signals? Or a post a link to a saved game?

Save and also addons folder will be linked after uploading. But I don't think that you will solve it.

Both is pak128. I suggest using hot nightly of pak128.

2. use right column - rewrite text from picture and click on Stánhout again

Greenling, you and your mania of making of collection of addons are really bothering. Also I think that you have already had most of them (which are saved in that addons folder archive). And by the way, I am surprised that you still have not achieved maximum number of addons.

I will read the forums for instructions on how to add the addons to my version.

It may be simplier you think, Severous ...
1. what version (of exe file) do you play? (if you use 110.x, all should be right)
2. if you use Windows (and singleuser_install = 0), open <... documents>/Simutrans and copy folder here - if you use else OS, I don't know
3. start game and load with addons (pak128)

- load game ...

... if you use pak64, then it is needed to download basic graphic files of pak128 - and latest nightly

1. File Version 0.110.0.1 . So that looks good.
2. Windows used. Not sure what a 'singleuser_install = 0' is?  But ive moved the folder downloaded into simutrans folder with the other pak sets. Given it a new name to keep it different from existing pak128.
3. When I start Simutrans I dont have any option called 'load with addons'.  No matter where I put the new pak (pak128czech) set I dont get a new option.

Should I be putting all the addons/files into my existing pak128 folder?  If I do that I assume I no longer have a standard pak128 set up to go back to after trying the save?

... aahh ...

1. singleuser_install = 0 means that addons/saves and some other things will be saved in extra folder of users; so, if singleuser_install would be set on 1, all would be only in main folder of game (default setting is 0)

2. make copy of folder of pak128's base graphics - and rename it to pak128czech - and after this operation start game, start pak128czech with addons - and load my game.

I am defeated.  I give up. I cannot get the modifications to work.  I have tried several times in view of your efforts to help me. 

I see the new pak128Czech option to play but loading the save game returns a fatal error with "unknown ground type '0' "

As before when I played a few years ago i will stick to playing the basics.  Sorry I could not investigate your train routing problem. Its just those type of game playing issues that most interest me.  Good luck and thanks again for your assistance.

It is strange - but thanks for effort.

With rebuilding of that green branch some trains began to use this way at least for one direction - and so situation became not so hard. But still ...

I will try to make another change of green branch - and target railway station - to trains could use only this way. But similary to what I wrote some time ago, part of this would be solved by change of choose signals.

I am sorry I could not respond to your personal messages offering me further assistance. I am not authorised to send personal messages on this forum.  I have tried the 'here' folder in your above post but a 404 error is returned from the file hosting site you have used.

Reading your advanced discussion on complex signals I doubt I will be able to advance your solution. 

Here is a simpler but perhaps similar route in my current Pak64 game.


The Green and Red lines are both part of a big one direction loop. The red line is a freight train stop at the oil pump for Train  line 4.  I want no other trains to go onto the red line.  None do.  All other trains stay on the green loop.  I think because there is only one turn in the section shown (prissi says no curves is important).  There are three turns on the red route for the same section.  I need no special signals nor waypoints to achieve the desired result.

I solution complete - all needed trains go as I need. I reconstruction two target stations and connection with them in such way that trains have to use that green branch.

I don't understand that Error 404. I tried to download that file now and I succeed. But may it be that you written that code wrong - and if picture is not readable, then there is choice to take else picture (called Jiný obrázek).

But please, don't be angry ... it is not about signals. Signals block trains to pass to track where is else train - but not tot force them to choose way in such examples as is choosing longer way rather than shorter.
