Google Maps 45 degree view
« on: May 25, 2012, 03:01:50 PM »
In some major cities Google Maps now has a "45 degree view" if you zoom in far enough, for instance:

This is similar enough to Simutrans isometric view that it might be useful as an inspiration for new buildings.

Very nice! It actually seems taken from Simutrans, maybe from a SMSC submission... but the light comes from East instead of South! ;)

Fine !
Isometric angle for Simutrans is rather 25, 565 degrees, isn'it ?
Obviously it's a real source of inspiration.
We can see, for example many trees and green areas which are not still the case in our paks !

Indeed -- that photo makes it obvious why pak96.hh was a good concept. pak.64-sized buildings on 96x96 tiles: http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=5788.0

the 3D box in sketchup tells me, the viewing angle in a full height isometric for simutrans is approximately 30 degrees.
I don't understand it, but half height is approximately 16.1 degrees.

I'm sure someone can figure out the math ;)

From the middle of the base of the 'tile/box', to the top corner of the box is approximately 30deg.
If you only go up to half of the corner, you get 16.1 deg
Graphical illustration with math that I've long forgotten.

oh, right, it's slowly coming back to me... You 'look down', from horizontal, by 30 degrees. So if objects on the ground are slanted at 60 degrees, it will appear perfectly flat to the viewer. The numbers are probably easier to work with if they are expressed as radians. Probably...
