I wondered what happened to this hobby. Nice to see new pieces...

...they were robots!

My projects... Tools for messing with Simutrans graphics. Graphic archive - templates and some other stuff for painters. Development logs for most recent information on what is going on. And of course pak128!

sojo

Some of this songs are very good. This would be a very good background-music for Simutrans. ;)

:D

I had it in mind to release my music for Simutrans, although since one can only play midi in-game, one would have to download the music separately and play it separately... And I'm not the only one who can release such music...

Is there any interest in a Simutrans MP3 project?

And I'd like to know which ones are liked and thought of for Simutrans, as the stuff I have released ranges from ideas that I wanted someone to hear (and just uploaded for that purpose) to some stuff I'm pretty happy with as-is... but I may not take the time to go back and tweak things that nobody likes... :)

Also, one to add to the list:

I seriously need to redo that one... I'd generated phrases, which worked moderately well; but I need to generate *words* or subphrases for it to work better. The only problem is that stuff, from 2007 -- I lost my sources. D:

But here's a link for anyone interested:
http://isaac.eiland-hall.com/music/IEH-003%20None%20Of%20Them%20Knew.mp3

And finally, for the latest one I did (Nullus Anxietas) - that came from trying to get a piece I've got stuck in my head working... Here's a tidbit - having some trouble with my keyboard, and this was just to share the general idea with a friend, so it's completely unrefined, even for me. :) just a few phrases, not a song. So with all that disclaimer, what I'm trying to get working:

We could consider extra musics as add-ons. If you want more musics, you can go to a site (music.simutrans.com, hi there!) and download some of them at your will, like pakfile add-ons.

A music site could act like add-ons site. Anyone could create new musics without worry of overloading official Simutrans version, submit somewhere and if approved, it's released at Music site.

music.simutrans.com is down.... you should try itunes.. :D

A thought occurs: There will probably be some disagreement as to what should be offered for download -- if there is no quality control at all, then we risk having a dumping ground for bad music (myself included)...

So maybe there should be a child board somewhere... someone can post a song, and have a poll to vote: include, or no? I wouldn't put it at 50% to include; more like 25% or maybe even less, not sure... Or perhaps we can have two or three tiers of music - that get at least 25%, 50%, or 75% in the voting...

I know that may assume we get more music than just from me, but perhaps my project will get others involved...

And my idea above may be good as is, or it may serve to start a discussion that results in a better idea :)

Prissi said no to mp3s in Simutrans. I'm not sure, but mp3 have a licences. Have you to pay to use mp3?

As an alternative it can used a other format. F.e. ogg.

I believe Prissi said no to incorporating MP3s internally like MIDI for that reason, although that's a good point: I'll set up an extension request for OGG and see what he says about that. The ability to play any sort of wave inside of Simutrans would make me stop putting "-nomidi" on my command line, for sure! (well, unless it was split into -nosound, -nomidi (like we have now), and add -noogg... hehee) ((the original idea for this thread, as relates to Simutrans, was to provide downloads so people could play in their favorite player while playing Simutrans... but gaining support for OGG internal to Simutrans would be cool))

By the way, a general comment: My asking for feedback is not just trying to spark praise... although it makes me extraordinarily happy if I can please with my music, I"m also open to feedback. (As long as you don't take offense if I don't take it... you know how that goes... :D but I open myself up to feedback, and promise to at least fully consider before rejecting ;-) )

Extension request if anyone wants to weigh in: http://forum.simutrans.com/index.php?topic=1932.new#new

I've listened to almost all and these are the ones I like most:

  • Wow! IEH-016 Orchestral Introduction sounds excellent. Did you really composed it?
  • Guitar II seems to be somehow from medieval age.
  • We Have Discovered Guitars is more Heavy Metal..perhaps would be good for an intro or a short promo. It's short and intense
  • Untitled Guitar and Strings is delicious...It remembers me when you play and rpg game and your are at town level. Calm and relax, again with a slightly medieval touch. Perfect.
  • Nullus Anxietas is very good too. The melody is prety simple but nice, and the chorus is well joined.
  • Cosmic Glide produces me relaxing sensations. It has a great feeling. Suggest flying, discovering, inmensity.
  • IEH-005 is an interesting mix between house and lounge, very calm... I like it.

You've done a awesome work. May I use them in possible future Simutrans promos?

:D

I did really compose IEH-016, and in fact, it was all improvisation, and that was the first take... There is one secret, though: HyperSonic has so many good patches/voices... this is not only mine and improvised and in one take, but is all one 'instrument'. Lower notes, if you press hard, have timpani... upper notes blend differently depending on velocity as well... hehe

We Have Discovered Guitars is not a finished product, just when I'd found patches and plugins that enabled me to make a pretty decent electric/distorted guitar :D

IEH-007 (untitled guitar/strings) is another one I need to go back and flesh out more... I really need to sit down and get the guitar stuff working... like, a full, real song. Guitar II is sort of along these lines... and Nullus Anxietas is really sort of as well...

I've been worried about Cosmic Glide - I *really* like the intro, but... it's discordant. I fear if that's the first thing of mine people hear, they'll stop and never listen again. hehe.

I'm so glad you like them, and absolutely yes: These may be used in any way for Simutrans.

Let me make a blanket statement: Any music I make is released to Simutrans under whatever license Simutrans has at the time, with no further restrictions. (In general, I release my music to the public with no restrictions, but if ever anyone makes money from it, of course I'd like a fair share based on the contribution the music makes... if that ever happens)

Perhaps you could include some percusion or a flute, to accompany the electric guitar.

As it's a cool first try-out. I'm looking forward to listen to the final version. What's that background sound in crescendo at the end of the song? violins? If you don't mind, I would suggest you include some wind instruments, and leave the percusion out of this theme. An ocarina may be a good choice.

Well, listening to the intro..firstly looks taken from Alien or any other space terror movie, then it turns into new age and finally the song starts. The first part is slightly strong in relation to the rest of the theme.

I think I will use some songs for a pak96.comic promo, too. Very nice. Thank you for this nice music.  :)

Awesome! I've got to buckle down and finetune and release music, I see...

In three weeks, I return home to Florida. I suspect I will be spending some time on music :)

:o impressive! It's absolutely brillant. Sounds very country...half melancolic, half hopeful. The piano and the wind instrument add enough variety to the melody. You only forgot the banjo... :D

P.S: Direct to the number one of Simutrans Billboard!
P.S: Now seriously, sounds very professional. I really like it.

Sounds good but a little bit mystical. It reminds me a little bit to Mike Oldfield mixed with The Carnival of the Animals - The Aquarium. Btw, When will you release the album? :::)

Escala Real...a blog about Simutrans in Spanish...

Isaac Eiland-Hall

lol... I have enough music to fill an album, but it's so disparate in style... and I need to finish some of these - polish the ones that are pretty complete; finish the unfinished ones... hehe. I'd have more motivation if Simutrans supported .ogg :)

kierongreen

Simutrans does support ogg via sdl mixer as I've said a few times in the past :p

Doesn't seem to work for me - I'm using SDL (under Windows, if it makes a difference)

# music.tab
music/01-Simutrans-Main-Theme.mid
Main Theme
music/02-Gotta-catch-that-train.mid
Gotta catch that train
music/03-Down-the-Old-Country-Highway.ogg
Down the Old Country Highway
music/04-IEH-031-Cleansing.ogg
IEH-031 Cleansing

Filenames are correct... Only the two mids get played, though.

kierongreen

Has to be the SDL_Mixer version, as opposed to the standard SDL one. Because of performance issues (no idea what causes them) I think the standard SDL version (which actually uses the windows native midi routines) is the standard one compiled for windows.

I've been working on making music again, so perhaps it's time to bump this thread and link to things I've done. lol. I made a couple of tracks in 2015, and a couple more since I've restarted recently.

In 2010, I "released" a lot of the music I had as an album, Journey Beginning: https://soundcloud.com/alexander-daychilde/sets/journey-beginning-2010 (Note that if I had it all to do over, I would drop that first track. I'm not happy with it. I'm mostly happy with most of the rest of it all... but not that one. lol)

In 2015, I started my second album, Living in the Future: https://soundcloud.com/alexander-daychilde/sets/living-in-the-future-2015

My two latest tracks, in order of recent first because I like it better. I think. Well, I'm still deciding. lol

Sidorian Transit: https://soundcloud.com/alexander-daychilde/sidonian-transit

Transient Joy: https://soundcloud.com/alexander-daychilde/transient-joy

EDIT: Couldn't sleep, one more: Foundation's Edge: https://soundcloud.com/alexander-daychilde/foundations-edge

prissi

The transient joy works best for me right now.
